Welcome to English 314! Before you can begin the work for this course, there are a few things you need to do:

  1. Make sure you bookmark our course page. Our course page is where you will find information about assignments, due dates, and course expectations. Here is the link:   https://englf314.community.uaf.edu/
  2. Check that you can log into our Blackboard course site. This is where you will check your grades, submit writing tutorial forms, and take grammar quizzes. If I post announcements here they will be emailed to you as soon as they are posted. You will login using your UAF username and password.
  3. Check your UAF email. You should check your email every day. This will be my primary means of communicating with you. If you email me, please allow me 24 hours in which to respond. IMPORTANT: I will NOT respond to emails from non University of Alaska accounts because I have no adequate way of verifying your identity, and I take your privacy very seriously.
  4. Locate our Google Drive folder. This can be accessed by following this link: English 314 Google Drive  IMPORTANT: Please note that you MUST be signed into your UAF email account in order to access our Google Drive folder. To access Google Drive from your email click on the nine square icon in the upper right hand corner. You will see a drop down menu. Select “Google Drive.” If you have difficulty joining our folder, by the end of the week please contact me via email.
  5. Go to Conference 1  and sign up for a conference time. This conference is mandatory and must be completed by the third week of classes. When you sign up for your conference time, please include your name, class, and phone number. If you are located outside of the USA, please send me a separate email (crstice@alaska.edu) so that we can make other arrangements.
  6. For this course students will create a personal blog website that will also serve as a platform for demonstrating learning objectives. This site can also be used later as a professional work portfolio. I recommend using the free version of one of the following options: WordPress, Wix, Weebly, or Medium.
  7. Print out the course schedule.
  8. Make note of the due dates for your four Writing Tutorials. These are REQUIRED assignments. They may be conducted in-person or by phone. You are STRONGLY urged to make your appointments in advance: UAF Writing Center.
  9. If you have any concerns or questions, please email me right away: crstice@alaska.edu
